Can AI Prevent the Climate Crisis?
In the world we live in today, it’s impossible to escape from Artificial Intelligence. Between teachers cautioning about AI’s error and unoriginality, the growing variety of chatbots, fake news being spread over AI-generated videos, and robots taking over certain jobs, the weight of the digital age feels incredibly heavy. For me, AI scares me because it reminds me of a version of a dystopian world that doesn’t fit with how I thought the future would look like when I was growing up. It’s shocking to me that simply typing in a few words on my keyboard can produce knowledge and data in a few seconds that would take hours for me to collect and study. However, the reality is that AI isn’t going anywhere. Whether it’s a terrifying new tool or an exciting, interesting one, the usage and production of it is on the rise and it will continue to grow in its usage in our day to day lives. In my opinion, Artificial Intelligence is something that can be used to help perfect ideas, not to form them. I thing human originality is special and unique and should be protected from the rigidness and perfection of AI. However, its speed and accuracy are resources that can be used in preventing the climate crisis.
Along with AI increasing in strength, the climate crisis is continuously growing in the power it has over communities. Wildfires, floods, and hurricanes are constantly devastating and destroying families’ lives, and most of the time it is affecting communities that contribute the least to climate change. Because of this, these places have the least amount of resources to recover as quickly as possible.
Even though AI is an eerie concept to me, I think it is important to adapt to the times we live in and take new tools we are provided with in stride. What if Artificial Intelligence can help engineers build on ideas that revolutionize relief tools that speed up a community’s recovery time, or a new material that can help climate refugees survive in extreme environments? What if AI can be used to fact-check calculations that need to be precise to save a person’s life? Maybe AI can be a tool that increases how effective we are in finding solutions to the climate crisis and those affected, rather than a tool that is solely bad. Because in my opinion, human originality is something that will persevere no matter the time – I don’t think the eradication of hard work and uniqueness is something that can ever be fully taken away from a person.
