The Reasons Why Plants are Critical to the Earth
As you read this article right now, the earth is being polluted from certain types of automobiles, factories, power plants, and many other things, which all burn fossil fuels. But another thing is happening, too. Nature is happening. Even though the earth is being polluted a lot right now, there are ways that we can prevent it. One of these ways is planting trees, flowers, and gardens.
Why Should We Plant Things?
Let’s say you planted a maple tree fifteen years ago. By now, it’s probably pretty tall. The tree’s leaves are one of the most important parts of why trees are good for the environment. What a leaf does is it takes in the carbon dioxide and turns it into oxygen that we can breathe. By this leaf taking in that little bit of carbon dioxide, it has prevented that carbon dioxide from melting into an ice glacier, or warming up the earth, or causing ocean acidification. Now multiply that by the hundreds of other leaves on the tree. A regular hardwood tree takes in 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in one year. 1 Just one tree can do that. What if every person in the world planted one tree? Take 48 pounds of carbon dioxide and multiply that by everyone you know, and others that you don’t know. Planting trees and other plants can help save the environment significantly.
What Can We Do to Help?
It’s not just trees that will help reduce carbon dioxide. Flowers can, too. Trees do absorb more carbon dioxide, but that doesn’t mean that flowers can’t, too. Flowers will also release oxygen from water they absorb in the air. The carbon dioxide that they absorb is turned into glucose that they can use to store energy.2 There are so many other ways you can help the environment. Other ways are not eating as much meat. People have to cut forests down to make room for grazing pastures, and raising livestock produces a lot of greenhouse gases, as well. 3 Biking to work or places that are close by will not burn any fossil fuels at all. There are so many effective ways that we can help and we are doing them right now, and need to continue to do them. We can save the environment step by step by doing these environmentally-friendly things.
