Why You Should Be Worried About Rising Waters

Rising sea levels are happening right now, as you are reading this and likely in the future. Waters are rising because of humans, not animals or weather.

Why Are Sea Levels Rising?

Sea levels are rising almost entirely because of greenhouse gases. Cars, factories, motorcycles, motorboats, and trucks all pollute A LOT. Basically anything with a motor that produces emissions pollutes. Let’s say 1 factory produces a lot of smoke (which they do). In a little while, an ice glacier or a piece of an ice glacier will melt and fall into the water. This makes sea levels rise higher than they should because of the extra water. It is like a cycle. Something or someone pollutes a lot, it melts ice glaciers, and then floods places, or worse, puts them underwater.

How Does This Affect Us?

This affects us because people who live on the coastlines like Miami Beach will have to move north, or inland. There would be more people in one area and that could cause a shortage of food and water, and many people would have to give up their homes because they will be underwater. Also, animals would have to leave their homes and without animals and insects, that could throw off the area’s ecosystem. We need to do something now.

What Can We Do To Help?

There are many ways that we can help, but the biggest one is not polluting. Planting trees, flowers and other plants helps too! If you can walk, bike or scooter, (or a different way to get somewhere without polluting), do those things! It can be your goal for the week to walk to at least one place to where you normally would drive. If you do need to drive, you can carpool, so there are less cars or trucks on the road. You can plant trees, because trees take in carbon dioxide, and release clean oxygen that we can breathe. Same thing with flowers. The main thing is, we can’t pollute as much, and we have to plant trees and flowers more often. We have to, or else the Earth will be in an environmental chaos. 😉🐦

  1. Hi Julia,
Great job, this was really well written! I learned so much about rising waters! What is your favorite way to get from place to place without polluting? My daughter Cassandra and son Michael LOVE to use their scooters to get around! They also really enjoy planting flowers in our garden! Have you ever planted flowers or vegetables? I can’t wait for your next blog and email so I can learn even more about protecting our environment!

    1. Hi Mike,
Thanks for reading my blog! My favorite way to get from place to place without polluting is biking. It’s the fastest non-polluting way to travel for me. I have planted flowers but I have not planted vegetables yet. We are thinking of planting a garden this spring though, with vegetables and flowers in it. Thanks for reading again!
