Miles Away

An effort to help the environment

Two Years Later . . .

After two years of writing a new post every month, I’ve started to notice new methods people develop to prevent climate change. Once, when I was reading a TIME article, I saw this advertisement that said that people were using carbon dioxide to create concrete. There are many other interesting inventions and ideas that are developing, as well. For example, I’ve heard of cars that stop their engine when at a stoplight or in traffic. When I go to the beach, the stations people use to pay for parking are solar powered. Almost every time that I am on the highway I see an electric car drive by. These inventions and ideas show us how far we can come in just a short period of time.

Along with new inventions and ideas being developed, I feel like in today’s world there are so many people who are aware of climate change. It wasn’t that long ago that what was happening to the Earth was not known. Now, since so many people know what is good and bad for the environment, metal and reusable water bottles are very common, many grocery stores use paper bags instead of plastic ones, and cars are more energy efficient. Today, there are so many companies that are recognizing climate change and acting on it. For example, the company Amazon has pledged to be carbon-neutral by 2040. And by 2025, Amazon is expected to run 100% on clean energy. 1

Many projects are in progress, as well. One is in Africa. The Sahel, the land that separates the Sahara and the savannah, is slowly turning into the Sahara Desert. The project that is working to preserve this area is called the Great Green Wall. It goes across the width of Africa, and it is slowly healing the Sahel. By planting new trees, more carbon dioxide is being absorbed and more oxygen is being produced in this area. The trees are giving shade to the ground, making it more fertile for farming. This project is helping the environment, this area’s ecosystems, and the people who live in this region.

Climate change is being fought as you read this. More and more people are becoming informed about the situation and different, creative ways to fight it are being created every year. Even though new inventions are being invented year after year, we have to keep spreading awareness and continue to help the environment, even if it is in little ways. It will take a long time before climate change is truly not an issue anymore, but we can get to that if we keep working on these inventions, ideas, and projects.
